Sneak Peek From Our Upcoming Book || The List

JOSEPH

(Mary’s Husband)

It’s hard not to fall in love with Joseph, Mary’s husband, who the Bible describes as a just man.

Back in the days, if a girl was found pregnant and was not married, she would be stoned to death and her family would be put to shame. So when Joseph found that Mary was pregnant, ideally, he was meant to run and scream to the priests. What did he do instead? He just decided within himself to break off their engagement quietly so no one would find out. Aww!

Looking at Joseph with new eyes, every single woman who has an issue she wants covering for should have Joseph at the top of her list, not Mr Tall, Dark, Rich and Handsome. Every woman who has a past, or an issue needs a husband-defender. Because Joseph will listen to God’s voice and protect her. Joseph will stay with her through thick and thin. Joseph will take her to the place of birthing of God’s purpose (her Bethlehem). Joseph will wait till she has fulfilled God’s will (giving birth to Jesus) before asking for his own needs to be met.

A good prayer should be “Lord, You found Joseph for Mary, who stood by her and protected her and covered her up. I ask and trust that you will also provide me a Joseph.”

I hope Joseph’s qualities inspire you on what to look out for in a husband:

  1. A Man Who Totally Obeys God

When Joseph awoke, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.”

Matthew 1:24, KJV

Joseph demonstrated obedience with his immediate response to the message brought to him by the angel. You should desire a man who obeys even if he may suffer for it. Joseph was told to cling to his wife, and he did!

2. A Man Who Hears And Understands God’s Voice

God saw the confusion building up inside Joseph and sent an angel to him saying:

Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bear a son; and you shall call his name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:20-21, KJV

From this point on, Joseph never doubted God’s will in choosing him to watch over Mary and her son. He was a faithful man – not only to his wife but to God. He was courageous enough to ignore the rumours and gossip that came as a result of Mary’s situation. He was sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

3. A Man Passionate About A Lifestyle Of Holiness

Did you know that Joseph never kissed Mary until they were legally married? Yes.

There was a consistency in his life. He could be counted as one who followed God regardless of the personal cost and world’s standard. He stood out for holiness.

It’s nice to think that no man could have been a better husband to Mary and the best father to Jesus. The Saviour couldn’t have been raised from a better family! You should desire a man who has a high priority for staying pure before and even after marriage.

4. A Man Who Trusts God Completely

Joseph almost called off the wedding. But when the message came, he believed it was from God. So he went ahead to marry Mary.

A man who trusts God is not easily swayed. Joseph was a man of conviction, faith and prayer. When Joseph had no one else to guide and comfort him, he turned to God and found the strength and love he needed to get through the most difficult circumstances.

Does the man you want to marry trust God enough to stay committed? You should desire a man who can know what God is saying concerning every matter.

5. A Man With A Noble Character

You will love how the Message Bible puts it:

Chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced.”

Matthew 1:19, MSG

Such a gentleman!

A man like Joseph would not tell your mistakes to the world.

A man like Joseph would never gossip or speak ill of anyone, and he would never lose his temper.

6. A Man Who Puts Family Before Career And Business

The angel told Joseph in a dream:

Get up, take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.

Matthew 2:13, KJV

Joseph had a business as a carpenter, or career if you will. It’s safe to say Joseph had a shop and employees too. He had business prospects, business partners and contacts. Fleeing to Egypt meant losing his business, yet he didn’t care. The life of his child was threatened, and his obligation was to Jesus and Mary.

Check on that guy!

  • Is he money-oriented or purpose-oriented?

  • Is he so engrossed in his career and business that he has no time for God and family?

Joseph shows that a man is a husband and father before he is a businessman. Joseph models a protective covering that that many men lack today. A man should protect his family from harm – physical, moral and spiritual.

PRAYER: Lord, give me a man that digs deeper into You – That loves to know You more and cultivates an intimate relationship with You. Lord, teach him your ways and help him to obey your word. Make him a covering for my children and I. Amen.
