Spiritual Growth Series || Spending Time With God

I woke yesterday with the need to reexamine the scenario with Jesus and Mary and Martha.
“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.
But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”-Luke 10:38-42
You know sometimes after we have given our lives to Christ, become baptized in the Spirit and basically just on fire for God, we also have the understandable desire just to serve God. To do things for Him. To go all out with DOING just like Martha did. But Jesus has always been one who puts everything in the right priority.
Martha thought that serving Jesus should be first but Jesus told her no, sitting at my feet to learn of me, to learn from me, to listen to what I have to say is way better than anything else you can give to me.
Why?
Because it is at Jesus’ feet, listening to His word that His nature is birthed in us. And one of the most important things God wants for us is for us to grow into the fullness of His stature and nature. Serving Jesus might bring us joy, fulfillment and immense pleasure but Jesus says “sitting at my feet is better than any work you could ever do for me”.
Why is that? Because the vine can only bear fruit in doing if it first stays in the vine. And ironically, this most important aspect is what we struggle with the most. Some of us are so busy we can hardly sit still to dig into Jesus for a day. And we need Him.. oh we do need Him DAILY.
So how can we choose the better part like Mary did?
First it takes understanding that this is the better part. Sowing the seed of the word of God into our lives is the better part. Not running around His work but ensuring that our walk with Him is on track.
Then it also takes a conscious effort to make this work. You have to look at your schedule. What time daily can you set aside to sit at the Lord’s feet? Don’t leave it to change r it may never get done. And don’t see it as a routine, see it as a date with the Lord of the universe. What do you do during that time? There is no strict rules but our Lord loves worship. Enter into His presence with praise and thanksgiving. Sing to Him. Praise Him for who He is. Get a worship playlist you use for your time with God. Journal to Him. Tell Him your thoughts. Read His word and write in your journal what’s impressed in your heart. Commit your day to Him, tell Him about your struggles, praise Him for breakthroughs, intercede for others… there is no rule to it, just enjoy God.
We will share a more detailed post on what to do when spending time with God. This is one of the most important parts of a believer’s life. Now that you are in God, you need consistent daily fellowship with Him. chose the better portion of sitting at Jesus’ feet; He says it shall never be taken away from you.
Keep a date with us on the next post on this series for tips for spending time with God for busy professionals and moms.
