The Armour Of A Homemaker
An Armour is something we put on that performs the dual function of preparing us for and protecting us in battle. Life itself is a battle, a full blown war. So whether we are within the home, or outside the home, no one is exempted. So anywhere we are, we are to be prepared. The enemy can come at any time.
How does a homemaker armour up for the inevitable battles?
Case Study – Jael
We don’t hear so much about Jael because Deborah is the popular one from that chapter but truth be told, Jael was the hero in it all.
“But Sisera ran away to the tent where a woman named Jael lived. Jael was the wife of Heber the Kenite. His family was at peace with King Jabin of Hazor. That is why Sisera ran to Jael’s tent. Jael saw him coming, so she went out to meet him and said, “Sir, come into my tent. Come in. Don’t be afraid.” So Sisera went into Jael’s tent, and she covered him with a blanket. But first, Sisera asked Jael for a drink of water. Jael had some milk in a bottle made from animal skin. So she gave him a drink of the milk and then covered him up. Then Sisera said to Jael, “Go stand at the entrance to the tent. If anyone comes by and asks you, ‘Is anyone in there?’ say, ‘No.’” But Jael found a tent peg and a hammer. She quietly went to Sisera. Sisera was very tired, so he was sleeping. She put the tent peg to the side of Sisera’s head and hit it with a hammer. The tent peg went through the side of his head and into the ground. Sisera died. Just then Barak came by Jael’s tent, looking for Sisera. Jael went out to meet Barak and said, “Come in here, and I will show you the man you are looking for.” So Barak entered the tent with Jael. There Barak found Sisera lying dead on the ground, with the tent peg through the side of his head. On that day God defeated King Jabin of Canaan for the Israelites.” – Judges 4:17-23, ERV
The people of Israel had as usual mess up. God gave them over to the Canaanites who treated them badly. Then, they decide to rebel. Deborah was then, the ruling judge while Barak was the General of the Army. It was battle time against the Canaanites whose general was this man named Sisera. Barak ought to have gone alone into battle but he insisted Deborah come with him. He knew he had the physical might but needed spiritual protection too, which Deborah had as a prophet. In battle, God’s people won, of course, and the enemy was defeated, except for Sisera who was able to escape on foot. There was this homemaker/housewife at her home, probably relaxing, then suddenly, the enemy appears right at her door. That’s Jael. In fact, she didn’t even wait for him to come in, she went out to meet him.
She didn’t run in, close the door and start crying or being afraid. Even though the scripture mentions that there was some kind of peace between her husband and Sisera, this was a battle. Some of us see an inevitable battle and because we are not armoured up, we shut the door and try to escape from it, or start crying and remain clueless. But all that doesn’t make the battle go away. The one you don’t fight now will come back again as something else later. But not Jael. She didn’t cower. She recognized that battles are just to announce us to our world but only when we win.
If you don’t have the right armour however, you will run, cower, hide or cry. If you have been prepared and armoured up, you will ‘GO OUT’ and face it. Apparently Jael, this ‘ordinary’ homemaker knew a battle, had her armour, went for it and got her victory.
What was her armour?
